The anime is more of a companion than accurate retelling of the first game, the two complement each other. Sorry to necro this, do you think watching the anime is enough to cover the story to skip the first game? So you can play/watch the remake for the story and not pay attention to things happening in the new dungeons, if you only want to know the story for the sequel. The game references the first game quite often in terms of story, so it is recommended to know the story first.
